Keeping up and Dealing With Winter
Well it is a new year and it is cool and wet here in California…but it sure could be worse!
As I sit here in front of the computer, getting ready to workout, I was thinking of how I could get the exercise that I want/need when it is raining. What I want and need is to hit the hills on the mountain bike…BUT we are in the middle of the largest rainfall in over a year, and it is not showing signs of subsiding. And I’m not into cols and wet while on the bike.
Now the elliptical is great, but not for every day. It is just not intense enough. So I got a rower, Concept 2. It is good, but tough to keep going…especially with a sore back from an injury a month ago. Running in thee rain? Hell no;-) Weights? Well, still not right on the back…
So here is the plan…spread it out and do some of everything. Set a time goal for each piece and an overall time goal for the workout. Also make this goal standard for the future, with increases either in intensity or length. Compete! But do it only with yourself! Then you will get increases in fitness!
Here is an example: When I started kettlebells, I picked a primary exercise and made it a goal to get stronger (over head press with 1 bell). Every 3 days I would train and always shoot for one or 2 more reps each side. Started with 4 reps (or so) with a 53 LB Kettlebell. Eventually (in a short time…like 2 months) got to 8 reps with a 70 LB kettlebell!
So do that with the cardio exercise…especially during the rain:
Rower in bursts, shooting for better times, reps/strokes, rpm…whatever!
Faster and more calories in the elliptical!
Run faster or farther (when the rain lets up…and if you get into a shower…run faster to get back home!)
Obviously all this is from home, which is where I train myself. I have to get out of my fitness center because it is business to me. You can do this wherever, and with whatever. Just do it!
Now Go Workout!
